Early Season PA Buck Down

Unread postby Bowtecharcher » Tue Oct 10, 2017 10:12 pm

The 2017 PA archery season started September 30. Just like any other season, I had high hopes for putting a nice buck on the ground. Here's where the problem presented itself. Every single one of our hit list bucks disappeared from our cameras. I decided to hunt two different stand sets where the bucks use to be, but they never showed. Puzzled by what was going on, I took an evening off from the stand and sat on a field edge glassing all evening. As luck would have it, I spotted a nice 8 point emerging from the woods into the field. After countless hours of studying Google Earth, and Huntstand, I had a plan laid out for Saturday afternoon. Fast forward to Saturday, the weather was hot, but the wind was in my favor, so I went for it. I packed my climber into a small patch of trees that I had seen my target buck come out of 3 days before hand, only to find out there was nothing I could climb. I made the decision to give it a go on the ground. As I sat behind the roll of the land just inside the field edge, the feeling of hopelessness was upon me. That was until about 6:25pm, when I glassed the field and saw my target buck standing only 70 yards from me. As I kept a watchful eye on him, I gathered up my bow, clipped on my release, and got ready. As if this deer read a script, he closed the distance to 29 yards. As he turned broadside, I drew my bow, leveled my bubble, put the pin right on his vitals, and let it fly. To my delight, I watched my lighted nock disappear right behind the shoulder. As I watched him run only 70 yards and fall before my eyes, the feeling of shock completely consumed me. Reality finally set in when I got my hands on those antlers... Sometimes the best laid plans are those that were never intended on happening.

Thanks everyone. Biggamecameraman, yes that was my one and only buck tag. I still have a doe tag left which I hope to fill here within a few weeks. I've been staying out of the woods glassing fields for my wife. Although every night she has been seeing bucks, none have came into range
