Permit buck down

Ok. Got him tagged, skinned, quartered and about to cook the backstraps!

Here's the long version with pics:

So I ran out back at 4 for the last hour of the hunt..
I get to the camera and was gonna check it quick to see if he was there in the past day but I didn't wanna waste the time as it was already late..
Weather was quiet and crisp.. perfect .

Lucky I picked the stand I Did, because if I went to the other one I would have bumped him from his bed as he was only 30 yards past it wide open.

After I climb the tree I do what i always do.. njww.

I go and who every min or so and only a few mins in the tree and I see what appears to be the rump of a deer standing behind a tree 100 yards away in all the cut trees we did last winter (created cover for the deer- I'm sure you read about it 1000x over the past year )

Anyway. All I have is a 4x rangefinder.. so I can see it's a buck and I watch ad he beds down.

I decided to wait a few mins after going over my options. I love a good stalk, and the conditions were right..
But that was risky not knowing where his doe might be bedded..

I was going to hook around the hill and pop up above him on the thicker side (from our hinge cuts) but I was running out of light fast and d idnt think there was enough time to make it there and grunt him in.. and risk getting a shot off on the ground with an alert deer..

So I did some r utting grunts /buck roars and doe bleats...
I can tell I got his attention, and I carried on for a good min or 2.. trying to create a realistic scenario in his head.

I put the calls away and watch..

Another minute goes by and he stands up facing away from me..
He stretches and shakes off.
Does a complete u turn and starts walking right to me.
As he closes the gap he's blocked out by the hill between us. I'm waiting for him to pop out to the right and I see a fox come running full speed from the distance heading towards the buck, and I'm thinking this fox is going to startle him and screw up the hunt .

All a sudden I hear footsteps ... he blades in so good with the hill side, I can't even see his rack.

He's 50 yards and closing slowly.. 1 step and glance around for the deer he was expecting to see.. every step took 20 seconds..

He's within bow range and I'm keeping my cool. I already had in my mind it's a done deal although you know as well as I do that alot could still go wrong.

He's facing me at 30 yards. (My bait is 30 yards down a hill, so it's a pretty steep shot, and the thing looks like an ant down there.

He turns broadside and I draw back but then he quickly took 3 steps and was behind a tree with just his shoulder sticking out.. he starts feeding .

I'm holding for a minute and start to get weak.. I figure I got some daylight left. Let me let down the draw and rest up a minute... which i do. It's better to regain strength then try and hold too long and chance the shot.

He steps out from behind the tree and I draw back and he's slightly quartering away. I place the pin, take a breath, and send the arrow.

Rage in the cage!

Instantly he's stubling. He went 20-30 yards and expired within 10 seconds.
I hit him a tad back from where I wanted but it worked out just fine. Liver, 1 lung, and I'm sure an artery of sorts because he died very fast.

Thanks to all who helped cut the trees-its unreal how much the action changed just having a small patch of downed trees on it!

It's very exciting to have harvested my 1st buck of my own land. My first zone 5 buck too.

Found him upside down like so...
