Good Day in the Field

Good Day in the Field

My friend who is an excellent bird hunter called on Sunday to say he had a crate of 18 chukar partridge that someone gave him and invited me to join him and his pointer Sugar for an afternoon of bird hunting. We waited until after noon time so we didn't mess up any turkey hunters.

It was a pleasant day with a nice breeze, a little too warm for the dog so we had to go slow. We put out the birds in sets then geared up and set the dog to work. Two feisty birds took off for parts unknown as soon as we released them.

Over the next 3 hours we hunted the remaining 16 birds and got 14. One got his freedom when I had a misfire and we never found one that we winged. The dog worked so well. It is neat to see her cast about then fetch up and point with her flanks quivering with excitement.

That was the last bird hunt for this year and it was a perfect end to a nice season.
